Restoring Maternal Care: 12,000 Safe Deliveries in Rural Ghana
Within twelve months, the center recorded 12,000 safe deliveries with zero maternal deaths — a dramatic improvement from their previous rate of 3-4 maternal deaths per year. The midwives report that they can now handle complicated deliveries in-house rather than referring patients to a hospital three hours away. The Postnatal Kits have also improved newborn care, with infection rates dropping by 60% in the first six months.
The Challenge
The Kumasi Maternal Health Center serves a catchment area of over 200,000 people across rural Ashanti Region. Before partnering with Project C.U.R.E., the center lacked basic delivery supplies, sterile birthing kits, and functional monitoring equipment. Midwives were forced to turn away women in labor when they ran out of clean supplies, and the center had no way to monitor fetal distress during complicated deliveries. Maternal mortality rates in the region were among the highest in the country.
The Solution
Project C.U.R.E. delivered 500 Birthing Kits (Midwife Kits), 300 Postnatal Kits (Merck for Mothers), and critical monitoring equipment including fetal dopplers, blood pressure monitors, and infant warmers. The shipment also included surgical instruments for emergency C-sections and a supply of basic medications. Training was provided to 24 midwives and 6 nurses on proper use of the equipment and sterile delivery protocols.
